Prompt for the Day: “Punishment”

The sadists at the Daily Post division of Word Press chose the word “Punishment” for us to create our various works of art about for the day.

What Forms of Discipline Do You Hate?

As a kid, spent my life in literal fear of my father who handed out the most painful punishments.  He had the knack of not leaving visible damage that wasn’t covered by our clothing.  So my teachers never knew of the abuse he inflicted on me and my younger brothers.  One of the first things I did upon leaving home to attend college was get self defence training!  He would never be able to hurt me again!

What forms of punishment did you endure as a child?

One of the worst punishments was in my high school years, when he forbade me to talk to my mother about my problems anymore.  She had to resort to asking my friends what was bothering me back then.  Thankfully, my friends all liked my mom!  Unfortunately, I had not told them about my father’s mandate about not speaking to her.  Face it, your high school years can be the most difficult time in a young person’s life to navigate through!

All comments will be read by me, personally!

Was an honest nerd who enjoyed teaching others when our teachers failed to clearly explain the subject matter to fellow students.  Would not give answers to my friends, just show them how to arrive at them on their own!  There was one time when a teacher was not grading one of my friend’s papers fairly, so I had her write the assigned essay and I signed my name to it and I wrote one and had her sign her name to it.  She received her first decently graded paper and I received an ‘A’ like normal.  When the teacher handed back our papers, I confessed our deceit.

Please Help Fight Hideous Disease

The medicine my neurologist prescribed for me to treat my multiple sclerosis is called Tysabri. Trying to find the actual cost on the internet is basically nearly impossible. I remember when I first started on the drug the amount the facility tried charging me was well over $2500. There was no way my husband and I could afford that then or every 28 days! Biogen (the company that manufactures the drug) has been helping us with some of the cost of the drug, but will not continue helping indefinitely.

Prompt for the Day: “Witness Protection”

The daredevils from the Daily Post division of Word Press came up with “Witness Protection” for today’s writing prompt.  Then they asked two seemingly simple questions-“When you do something scary or stressful — bungee jumping, public speaking, etc. — do you prefer to be surrounded by friends or by strangers? Why?”

Personally,

I prefer to keep my stupid mistakes completely to myself.  Unfortunately, when I pushed myself to become a good public speaker, in Junior and Senior High school it meant having to speak before large crowds of people.  On the positive side, I did not vomit before, during, or even after the speeches were delivered.  Actually managed to advance all the way to the state level of competition!

My speech writing skills came in handy when I went off to attend college out of state.  Now my speaking was done in classrooms full of total strangers.  There was not a single friend anywhere in sight!  Was glad to be making my mistakes in total obscurity.  Made a lot of them during the years I went to college.  Isn’t that the whole point of moving away from home?

Prompt for the Day-“Can’t Stand Me”

The introverts from the Daily Post division of Word Press came up with the demeaning prompt for the day of “Can’t Stand Me” to start our writing endeavors.  If that wasn’t degrading enough, they added two questions: “What do you find more unbearable: watching a video of yourself, or listening to a recording of your voice? Why?”

Why I Can’t Stand Me

Even as a child who climbed trees and all that fun stuff, was extremely shy.  Hated having pictures taken or even worse hearing my voice on tape!  The period of time I grew up in videoes of myself, fortunately, didn’t exist.  Shudder to imagine a kid growing up with a self-conscious constant feeling like I had today, where every move you make ends up on a recording somewhere!  Talk about the need for psychological help that would cause for the child or even adults.

Forced myself to enter public speaking contests in both Junior and Senior High School.  Ended up actually succeeding at the county and state levels of competition.  Talk about causing myself to have a queasy stomach!  Lucky I did not end up barfing on the stage.  Turned out to be an excellent speech writer, which came in handy during the contests.

Prompt for the Day: “Learning Style”

The extremely nosy people at the Daily Post group of Word Press wanted you to use the daily prompt of “Learning Style” to influence today’s works.  The included several more invasive questions: “What’s your learning style? Do you prefer learning in a group and in an interactive setting? Or one-on-one? Do you retain information best through lectures, or visuals, or simply by reading books?”

Knowledge comes to me through Reading

Have been reading since about the age of three.  Am a voracious reader.  Read every single book the library in the grade school I attended as a child at least once.  Granted was a tiny town.  The graduating class from high school included something in the low forties number of graduates.  Actually included several small towns like Clairman, Darmstadt, and a few other postage stamp sized places.  No surprise I was at the top of my classes.  Knew the subjects better than some of the teachers there did!

In junior and senior high school, learned to take exact notes from my classes.  One teacher was dumb enough to question a proof I wrote in Geometry class.  Had to incorporate another one of my math teachers to confirm I was correct!  I used absolutely no questionable foundations in my proofs.  My main math teacher explained all she had to do to see the solution to the proof was correct was to look in the previous class proofs I had already done.

Prompt for the Day: “New Sensation”

The memory reminders from the Daily Post group from Word Press came up with the prompt of “New Sensation” to remind us of when we were much younger.  They also added a few words to ignite our burning minds-“Ah, sweet youth. No matter whether you grew up sporting a fedora, penny loafers, poodle skirts, bell-bottoms, leg-warmers, skinny jeans, Madonna-inspired net shirts and rosaries, goth garb, a spikey mohawk, or even a wave that would put the Bieber to shame, you made a fashion statement, unique to you. Describe your favorite fashions from days of yore or current trends you think are stylin’.”

My Sensations

Tended to be a comfortable pair of jeans!  T-shirts and or sweatshirts completed my look.  I remember when INXS released their song “New Sensation” back in 1991.  Was not my favorite type of music at the time, but was better than the music that played in our barn while we milked the cows each and every morning!  My mother made me get a permanent done by a professional beautician in junior and senior high school.  Beat the heck out of the home perms she used to give me when I was really little.

Was a loner all my life.  My best friend growing up was my second cousin.  (We had no idea we were related, until I took her with me to my mother’s parents house.  Grandma started laughing when she pointed out we were related to each other through her side of the  family!)  Considering how bad a relationship I had with my other cousins, she was the only one I got along with.  We still keep in touch today even though we live many miles away from each other.
